Introduction

Niuro (also spelled niyuro or niguro), commonly known as fiddlehead fern, is one of Nepal’s most popular wild edible vegetables. The most found variety consumed in Nepal is the ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris). Nepalese call this unique vegetable “niuro,” which literally translates to “bent” or “curled” just like its plant character, describing its distinctive spiral appearance. Fiddlehead ferns are the young growing points of immature fern. The name “fiddlehead” comes from their resemblance to the curled ornamentation (scroll) on the end of stringed instruments like violins. They are harvested early in the season before the frond opens and reaches full height, cut close to the ground.

Distribution

Niuro is widely consumed all over Nepal and is found in the wild, particularly in moist, partly shady areas like riverbanks and creek banks. The vegetables are harvested from March to September, with peak consumption during the monsoon season. It is found mostly in wild form in tropical forest areas and damp land and no commercial cultivation has been reported till now.
