Baya Weaver: Bird with upside down nest

Baya weaver is a small bird just like the house sparrow but with a yellow/orange tinge on the head. These are popular birds in Nepal due to their amazing nest-building skills. Locally they are called Tope Chara (तोप चरा ).

The nest is built upside down with the entry point at the bottom. It looks unsafe for eggs and young birds but they are built strongly and safely.

The fascinating thing about this bird is that only the male bird built it on its own. When the nest is near completion, the female bird came and inspects the nest built quality inside and outside and chooses the best nest. The female bird chooses its partner along with the nest. After that female designs the interior of the nest and the male finishes the outside parts. They lay eggs and raise family there..

  1. I never heard about Baya Weaver before and am grateful that you told this
wonderful story. I like their division of duties and their togetherness.

    Great photos

  2. We also have weaver birds in South Africa, and like you I did a couple of thoughts, blogs on this dearly male, who was spurned by females. So yes I also like to watch them, you’ll find the story/blog “Through my Office Window”, on my site. Your weavers are bigger than here, I am sure, and your photos are 1000% better than mine.

    1. My backyard is like wildlife sanctuary ???????? specially for birds and insects. Most of the blog posts in my blog are from my backyard. I have seen some unique birds here. But this baya weaver is one of the most common bird here in my country. It’s like everyday bird.
